As a continuation of remembering the glories of our Guru Maharaj H H Mahavishnu Goswami, I am presenting below the letter that was written by one of exalted disciple of Srila Prabhupada, H H Bhakti Vigna Vinashaka Narasimha Maharaj. Maharaj is a bold and stalwart preacher, preaching all over the world, mainly in unwelcoming countries like Malaysia, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, UAE and so on. At the same time Maharaj is very very simple and humble, keeps a very low profile, is easily approachable and is very kind and loving to everyone. This letter below was written by B.V.V Narasimha Maharaj to our senior godbrother H G Devakinandan Prabhu after the departure of our spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj.

While going through Srila Prabhupada lilamrta, we find that in 1967, when Srila Prabhupada was in Sanfrancisco, he had an heart attack and his left side was paralyzed. At that time, the disciples admitted him in the hospital and while in the hospital, Prabhupada always wanted to preach to the doctors and nurses. He used to ask his disciples to play his taped lecture for the doctor to hear. He always tried speaking to the doctor wanting to explain about Krishna . The doctors were advising that swamiji should not be preaching while in such weak health. While in the hospital, a disciple asked Prabhupada the meaning of the lotus feet of Krishna and then immediately Prabhupada sang the following verse from Srimad Bhagavatam 10.14.58

samaashritaa ye pada-pallava-plavam
mahat-padam punya-yasho-muraareh
bhavaambudhir vatsa-padam param padam
padam padam yad vipadaam na teshaam

For those who have accepted the boat of the lotus feet of the Lord, who is the shelter of the cosmic manifestation and is famous as Muraari, the enemy of the Mura demon, the ocean of the material world is like the water contained in a calf’s hoof-print. Their goal is param padam, Vaikuntha, the place where there are no material miseries, not the place where there is danger at every step.

The Lord states in the Gita that He accepts a leaf, flower, fruit or water from His bhaktas if it is offered with devotion. These items are easily available and by offering these things one can get His blessings to enter into His Kingdom. And from the scriptures we hear that the Lord has great liking for Tulasi leaves and He is very much pleased if we offer tulasi leaves to Him.

Today we will share a beautiful offering of H H Janananda Goswami Maharaj unto our spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on the occassion of his samadhi on 27th Jan 2010. H H Janananda Goswami Maharaj is a senior disciple of Srila Prabhupada. He had become a devotee in London and served there in the beginning years of his Krishna consciousness (early 70’s) wherein he had spent a lot of time with our Guru Maharaj. Janananda Maharaj is a very exalted devotee, traveling and preaching all over the world, the main driving force behind the World Holy Name initiative and various other wonderful projects in ISKCON. His kirtans, harinam, spontaneous skits, realizations, scholarliness in the shastras, witty nature, humility and many other transcendental qualities attracts even the most demoniac souls to the lotus feet of Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krishna.

Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Kalacakra Krsna das
H H Janananda Goswami wrote:

Dear Mahavishnu Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances and ecstatic embraces. All glories to Srila Prabhupada who brought us together and has now separated us at least for a while. But not really. I cannot but remember many wonderful times together laughing and laughing. You were just like my favourite uncle. I love your sense of humour. Right from the first time I saw you, maybe back in 1974, I was naturally attracted to you. You used to roll up to Bhaktivedanta Manor in that little old car – what was it? After your work you would come. I remember you sitting in Prabhupada’s room quietly studying his books – practically unseen by the “busy” devotees who had “things to do”. At that time you hesitated to heed Prabhupada’s call to join him and preach.

We came across a very nice past time of the Lord and wanted to share this with all of you. On one occasion, Narada went to Lord Narayana. In the course of their conversation, Narayana asked Narada, "You move around the three worlds, what news have you brought for Me from your wanderings? Have you seen anything great in My creation?" "What can be greater than You in the three worlds!" replied Narada. On hearing this, Narayana said, "I am asking you about My creation and not about Myself."

I received this inspirational story recently and would like to explain a little bit with some of the relevant instructions from Srimad Bhagavatam.

When Yudhishtira Maharaj was ruling this planet, Bhima used to help in solving problems of people, hence people whoever has any questions / problems would come to Bhima and ask him for help. One day, one citizen came and told Bhima that he noticed a strange thing that day that his fence is moving into other’s place and he is wondering why it happened like that. Bhima can help if a demon is troubling but not these kind of puzzles so he asked him to approach Yudhishtira Maharaj.

"I am separated from the Supreme Lord because of my being in this material body, which is made of five elements, and therefore my qualities and senses are being misused, although I am essentially spiritual. Because the Supreme Personality of Godhead is transcendental to material nature and the living entities, because He is devoid of such a material body, and because He is always glorious in His spiritual qualities, I offer my obeisances unto Him."

Who will encourage us even when we performed minute service, who will pat us on our backs to push us further to do more service, who will believe in us when everyone has given up?"

Benediction Asked by the Supreme Lord [granthraj]

From the scriptures we understand that the Supreme Lord is the bestower of all benedictions to the living entities based on their desire and qualification. Many living entities approach the Lord with different desires and praying to Him for many things. However, we can see in Mahabharata and Ramayana and other scriptures that the Lord Himself asks for many benedictions from His so-called elders, devotees and devatas. We see in Mahabharata that Lord Krishna went to Mount Kailash and prayed to Lord Shiva for a son (The history is that Lord Shiva once prayed to the Supreme Lord for an opportunity to offer a benediction to the Supreme Lord. The Lord said He will fulfill Lord Siva’s desire during Krishna lila, by praying for a son). In Ramayana, we can see that Lord Rama asked two benedictions from Lord Brahma after the battle with Ravana was over. In Bhagavata purana, Lord Parasurama asked benediction to Jamadagni to bring back His mother and brothers back to life. In all the above situations the Lord always asked benedictions to glorify the other person and nothing for Himself. This is because the Lord by nature is ‘aapta kaama‘ (one who has no unfulfilled desires). In spite of this, He asks benedictions from His servant devotees to satisfy and please them. There was one instance that the Lord asked for a benediction for Himself and we can see how exemplary was that benediction. This wonderful pastime occurs in the Mahabharata and is briefly stated below.

In Srimad Bhagavatam 4.28, "Puranjana Becomes a Woman in the Next Life" – King Puranjana owing to excessive attachment to his wife and being engrossed in thoughts of worrying about her at the time of death, is born as a woman in his next life. He takes birth as the daughter Vaidarbhi of King Vidarbha. Vaidarbhi gets married to King Malayadhvaja and during vanaprastha follows her husband and serves him and performs austerities herself. Her relationship with her husband is compared with the relationship of the disciple with his spiritual master. The example and comparison teaches us at two levels:

a)Vanaprastha duties for wife and husband
b) Relationship of disciple with spiritual master

Everyone in this material world, they are after peace, but they don’t want to control the senses. It is not possible. Just like we are diseased, and doctor says that "You take this medicine, you take this diet," but we cannot control. We are taking anything we like, against the instruction of the physician. Then how we can be cured? Similarly, we want cure of the chaotic condition of this material world, we want peace and prosperity, but we are not ready to control the senses. We do not know how to control the senses. We do not know the real yogic principle of controlling the senses. So there is no possibility of peace. Artificially, we may try for it. It is not possible.

Few months back my younger daughter Mahika was in hospital for Malaria treatment. It was the third day in the hospital and doctors were still struggling to find out the exact malaria strain to confirm the necessary medicines. Fever had gone high. Paracetamol and icepacks were the only material solutions at that time on which we were relying. We were very sad and morose due to the slow effect of the measures taken by the doctors. Our beloved god brother HG Govardhan Prabhuji visited the hospital and after initial greetings, first thing he asked me was why Krishna’s photograph is not in the room? Have you recited Narsimha Kavacha? I had no alternative but to look down at my toes. He recited the Narasimha Kavacha there with us and also we chanted few rounds of Japa. That was the eye opener. I immediately rushed home, brought the Prabhupada chanting box, a copy of Bhagavad Gita and a photograph of Krishna. The fever was down within 2 hours and from that day onwards there was no fever. Doctors found the stain on next day morning and started routine dose of quinine. Mahika was fit to leave hospital in next 2 days time. When I shared my experience with HG Devakinandan Prabhuji, his first comment was “This is the power of the association of devotees”.
