Pure Life of a Perfect Seer [granthraj]

In the First canto, Fifth chapter of Srimad Bhagavatam, we find that Srila Narada muni advises Srila Vyasadeva to compose transcendental literature which is not only attractive but can also bring liberation from all kinds of bondage. Narada muni glorifies that Srila Vyasadeva is perfectly qualified to perform this service because of the following qualities he possesses as described in Srimad Bhagavatam 1.5.13:

atho mahaa-bhaaga bhavaan amogha-drk
shuci-shravaah satya-rato dhrta-vratah
urukramasyaakhila-bandha-muktaye
samaadhinaanusmara tad-viceshtitam

"O Vyasadeva, your vision is completely perfect. Your good fame is spotless. You are firm in vow and situated in truthfulness. And thus you can think of the pastimes of the Lord in trance for the liberation of the people in general from all material bondage."

In one of the discussions with H.G. Atma Prasad prabhu in London on 11th June 2008, our beloved Guru Maharaj was describing his life in the early days. From the discussion which is partially transcribed below, we can see that our beloved spiritual master possesses all the qualities as mentioned in the above verse.

Amogha drk – Perfect seer: Maharaj describes his life time as between 1920 and 2010 when he was speaking in 11th June 2008.

Maha-bhaaga – Most fortunate: Maharaj describes his great fortune of having been born in a pure vaishnava family who had unflinching faith in Lord Krishna.

Shuci-shravaah – Spotless fame: From the description below we can see the pure and spotless way Maharaj lilved all through his life.

Satya-ratah – Vow of truthfulness: We can see the completely honest nature of Maharaj’s father which Maharaj himself exhibited in all his dealings.

Dhrta vratah – Fixed in spiritual qualities: Maharaj following a super-simple lifestyle constantly adhered to Srimad Bhagavatam thinking repeatedly and describing Bhagavatam (anusmara) and manifested his spiritual qualities till the time of his final pastime.

The following is the transcription of the discussion on 11th June 2008:

HG Atma Prasad Prabhu: Maharaj, you have seen the different phases of life. The whole gamut ?

H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj: Yes, my prerogative is that I have seen through everything from 1920 to 2010. I was not thinking that I will survive. And even now if everything goes right, may be another four or five years. That is nothing. Even now I am not [suffering] that bad. Really it is only because of our vedic life. Otherwise I would have gone long ago. I was always getting up early in the morning and going to sleep early. In our town, there was a corporation municipality and it had a siren. So everyday they play a big siren so the whole village hears at 9.00 p.m. So everything must be closed. Then early in the morning again, the siren will ring at 5.00 a.m. Everybody must get up. We never heard the 9.00 p.m. siren and we never missed the 5.00 a.m siren. We were getting into bed early and getting up early. Nobody was sick in my house. Once in a year or so, some fever or something was there. Otherwise nothing. It is our experience. Just by getting to bed early and waking up early, we were quiet healthy.

Atma Prasad: Maharaj your earlier generation, did they live long?

Maharaj: Our earlier generation they lived up to hundred years and very peaceful.Very peaceful.

Atma Prasad: Maharaj, you had told that for thousands of people in your village there was only one policeman.

Maharaj: Yes. The policeman was just meant for banging [the bell to announce the time]. Nobody even knew that he was a policeman. Even then the whole village was peaceful. He was always in civil dress.

Atma Prasad: In the village was there regular Ramayan katha or Bhagavath katha?

Maharaj: In our village Ramayan Mandalis were there. We always had Srimad Bhagavatam. Nobody argued. Only my generation which was arguing. Since then things started deteriorating because we were kali yuga products and so called educated. Illicit sex I have never heard. I had to refer to that word in dictionary as to what is illicit sex. Such a pure society was there. People were very simple and straightforward.

Atma Prasad: Maharaj, you were sometimes telling that your father always opened the shop very late than the others.

Maharaj: I told my father every body is opening the shop at 8.00 a.m and why are you going at 10.00 a.m? Then people won’t come to the shop. Father said that tomorrow you please come to the shop with me. His way was to perform pooja and take care of the cows and go after 10.00 a.m.The next day when we went, two people were sitting on the stairs of the shop. My father asked, "Did not these people see your uncle’s shops? Why are they sitting here? Just remember whatever is in my destiny is bound to come. If it is not in my destiny, even if I open the shop at 6.00 a.m, nobody will come." His way was very nice. He was very straight forward. When the customer comes, he will throw before them the bills which he paid for the items and tell them that this I what have paid, and tell me how much you can pay. The customer will fix the price. That is why people were waiting for him. At 12 noon he will close. Nice lunch, rest and again he will come again at 5.00 PM to open the shop.

I have never seen him baffled, come what may. Everything happened to our surprise and for those who were doing so much, everything was not done.

We have never heard of cancer and the other diseases or bypass or any heart diseases. Only TB I have heard. Now we are losing everywhere. People do not know that this technological advancement is ignorance. Prabhupada shouts that if you want to be happy propagate Srimad Bhagavatam widely and it should be read everywhere. Particularly Prabhupada’s Bhagavatam is very much needed. Day and night he has written.
