While explaining about the glories of Supreme Lord to his son Narada Muni, Lord Brahma says in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.6.36,
nato smyaham tac caranam sameeyushaam
bhavac chidam svasty ayanam sumangalam
yohy aatma maayaa vibhavam sma paryagaat
yathaa nabhah svaantam athaapare kutah
"Therefore it is best for me to surrender unto His feet, which alone can deliver one from the miseries of repeated birth and death. Such surrender is all-auspicious and allows one to perceive all happiness. Even the sky cannot estimate the limits of its own expansion. So what can others do when the Lord Himself is unable to estimate His own limits?"
The three important things which happen when we pay obeisances unto the Lord’s lotus feet are nicely mentioned in the second line of the above verse.
1) bhavac chidam – stops repetition of birth and death
2) svasti ayanam – allows the perception of all happiness;
3) su-mangalam—all-auspicious
His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada, very nicely glorifies Lord Brahmaji in the purport to above verse. He says – "Lord Brahma, the greatest of all learned living beings, the greatest sacrificer, the greatest observer of the austere life, and the greatest self-realized mystic, advises us, as the supreme spiritual master of all living beings, that one should simply surrender unto the lotus feet of the Lord in order to achieve all success, even up to the limit of being liberated from the miseries of material life and being endowed with all-auspicious spiritual existence. Lord Brahma is known as the pitamaha, or the father’s father. A young man consults his experienced father about discharging his duties. So the father is naturally a good advisor. But Lord Brahma is the father of all fathers. He is the father of the father of Manu, who is the father of mankind all over the universal planets. Therefore the men of this insignificant planet should kindly accept the instruction of Brahmaji and would do well to surrender unto the lotus feet of the Lord rather than try to estimate the length and breadth of the Lord’s potencies."
Few days back HG Narahari Krishna das Prabhuji gave a thought provoking class on the eve of Govardhan Pooja in Chennai. Prabhuji was telling how when we hear the Govardhan pastime, sometimes we mistake Indra to be a vey bad person. Indra became angry when the cow-herd men of Vrindavan did not give the offerings due to him, as per the advice of some little boy. Indra did not know that the little boy in Vrindavan is the all powerful Supreme Personality of Godhead – Krishna. The moment he came to know that the little boy is none other than Krishna, who has appeared in Vrindavan as the son of Nanda Maharaj, he immediately stopped the rains and surrendered unto the Lord and sought for forgivance.
We on the other hand are much worse. We cannot even dare to comment about Indra. Both materially and spiritually, Indra is far far advanced than us. He is directly appointed by Krishna as the King of Heaven and is assigned the duty of giving rains. Here we are living in this world, performing duties as per our karma. Inspite of knowing the supremacy of Lord very nicely, hearing about so many of His pastimes, glories of His Name and inspite of being protected by Him so many times in our own personal life, still we are behaving in a disrespectful manner towards Him. The Lord is omni-present and is very much present in His Deity form. Inspite of knowing this truth – we continue to misbehave in front of the Deities by scolding each other etc. By all these acts we are voluntarily falling into a bottomless pit. Realising our own insignificant position – let us not comment/find faults with the Lord and His devotees. Instead may we simply surrender unto His feet and try to follow the instructions He has provided us in the scriptures.
As Gurudev says – "If we voluntarily don’t bow down to Krishna now, then in old-age we will get hunch back and will automatically be forced to bow." So the choice is ours.
Thank you very much,
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi
